Why Gold? 

Gabriella’s Smile Foundation is committed to raising awareness for pediatric cancer. September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. Gold in September, also known as the G9 campaign, was created by an 11 year-old little girl whose twin brother was battling pediatric cancer. Annie Bartosz saw the nation turn pink in October for Breast Cancer, and became determined to turn the world Gold in September for kids battling cancer. The loss of our own daughter has inspired us to do the same.

We encourage you to Go Gold this month! San Antonio Mayor Ron Nirenberg has signed an official proclamation for San Antonio designating September 28 as Gold Out Day. We encourage fellow San Antonians and surrounding communities to wear gold on this day.

Bereaved Cancer Moms Lunch- (9/1) Join other moms who have experienced the devastating loss of a child to cancer. For more information contact us at 210-670-6200.

Gold Out Pep Rally- (9/7) We are launching our Gold Out Campaign at the Children’s Cancer Support Center. Stop by for the celebration from 5:30 PM- 6:30 PM. Pep Rally starts at 5:45 PM. You can purchase shirts and yard signs for childhood awareness month.

Camp Firefly- (9/15-9/17) A bereavement weekend camp experience for those families who have suffered the loss of a child to cancer. While this has all the components of a typical family camp weekend, there is also a time to remember the child who lost their battle with cancer. Amid all the fun camp activities, there is opportunity for these families to be around each other and heal as much as possible through their interactions. 

Models of Courage-(9/16) Please join Angie’s Angels for our 6th Annual MODELS OF COURAGE Fashion Show! All of our models are cancer SURVIVORS, FIGHTERS, or have a SPECIAL DISABILITY, DISORDER OR HANDICAP.

Head for the Cure (9/23)- Head for the Cure is 5k benefitting Jaxon's FROG Foundation and brain cancer research. It's Sept 23. Get more information here.

Noche de Oro- (9/24) Join us for an evening of great food, live music, fun and celebration all for a great cause benefitting Gabriella’s Smile Foundation and the Children’s Cancer Support Center! Join us for an evening of great food, fun and celebration all for a great cause! Wear your best SUPERHERO costume and Be A Hero for kids battling cancer.

Veronica’s Journey 5K- 9/24 TIMED EVENT WITH PRIZES FOR TOP FINISHERS IN ALL AGE GROUPS T-SHIRTS, MEDALS, TACOS, AND MORE! At 13 mos., Veronica was diagnosed with Ependymoma, or brain cancer. Though she valiantly fought the tumor for 11 months, she would not survive her battle and went to be with our Lord on August 24, 2017. This 5K is in her memory and all children who battle cancer. Proceeds will benefit Veronica’s Boutique of Catholic Charities and Gabriella’s Smile Foundation.

Gold Out Day San Antonio- (9/28) Gold Out Day SA is by official proclamation of San Antonio Mayor Ron Nirenberg as a day to observe childhood cancer awareness month. All citizens are encouraged to wear GOLD. Join us for our Gold Out Day of Giving.

A Night of Comedy Gold for Childhood Cancer Awareness- 9/30 Join Stay Strong Foundation Inc. for a night full of laughs for a great cause! Join us for a night of laughs & FUNdraising.
VIP tables will be available along with special “Meet & Greet” with the comedians.

It takes a city- schools, community organizations and businesses

Did you know? The international awareness symbol for Childhood Cancer is the gold ribbon. Unlike other cancer awareness ribbons, which focus on a singular type of cancer, the gold ribbon is a symbol for all forms of cancer affecting children and adolescents.

In 1997, a group of parents picked gold as the official color for the childhood cancer awareness ribbon. The color gold symbolizes how precious children are and the resiliency of childhood cancer heroes.  

We need YOUR help to raise childhood cancer awareness month in our community this September! We are looking for businesses, schools and organizations in our community to show their support for our September Gold Out SA campaign. There are many ways you can help spread awareness during the month of September.

• Wear GOLD/ YELLOW on Fridays during September.

• Download our social media graphics and posters to post at your business or workplace.

• Go Gold at work! Wear a GOLD RIBBON and encourage your coworkers to also wear gold ribbons.

• Purchase a GOLD OUT SA t-shirt.

• Make a donation to Gabriella’s Smile Foundation to help children fighting cancer in our community.

• Invite friends and family to support Gold Out SA. Create your fundraiser here and 100% of what you raise goes back to Gabriella’s Smile Foundation.

• If you are a business owner, make a donation or ask employees to donate and consider matching their donation.

• Raise awareness at your school. Encourage students and teachers to wear gold throughout the month, decorate their classroom doors in gold or host a penny wars/coin collection contest to raise funds for Gabriella’s Smile Foundation to help children fighting cancer in our community.

• You can find more ways to raise awareness here. As members of the Coalition of Childhood Cancer, we want to share their Gold Awareness Project ideas. The Gold Awareness Project offers numerous creative ways to promote powerful messages and gold icons in September to increase awareness of childhood cancer. Through this project, CAC2 hopes to inspire everyone for action and engagement locally, nationally, and globally. See how you can help raise awareness in your home, neighborhood, school or city.

By working together and raising awareness, we can do our part right here in our community. Let's turn San Antonio GOLD on September 28. Raising awareness can start with one family,  but in order to see real change, it takes a city!
